The most decorated war hero in the British Army has lambasted the Government for its “disgraceful” treatment of soldiers suffering mental trauma on their return from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry, who earned the Victoria Cross for twice displaying remarkable gallantry in Iraq, said in an interview with The Independent that it was an outrage that veterans were not getting better support for severe combat stress, depression and mental breakdowns.
He accused the Government of neglecting its duty to the servicemen and women who were still battling posttraumatic and combat stress after tours of duty. He urged the Ministry of Defence to take more responsibility for soldiers’ mental health, and expressed concern that the military charities were being left to deal with the burden.
